Oh, the Seventh Grade! This one had a big impact. The cusp of adolescence, the friendships, the crushes, the music. Girls were cute and Three Dog Night was cool. Midway through camp, we watched Neil Armstrong land on the moon, all of us sitting in the commons room while a priest tried to adjust the rabbit ears on an old black & white TV.

Claudia, another Odessa kid. We went to kindergarten together and learned to read using the Carden Method, and stayed friends throughout all our gradeschool years and through college. A world-class costume designer for film and stage, and currently Professor at SMU's Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas. There is nothing I can possibly add to that. Hello, Claudia.

I made friends with this kid from Midland. He was the only guy I had ever met who also had the soundtrack to the musical "Hair," though he owned the British version. We debated which one was dirtier. He enjoyed making up bawdy lyrics for popular songs.

Elizabeth, Donnie's sister. I didn't have a mad crush yet, but it was coming soon. Everybody called her Beth, and she was the cutest thing in shorts.

Another Midland kid. This one was a lot of fun, and trouble. He was a strong swimmer, a member of his school team, and when he got caught doing something he'd suggest his own punishment: "Make me swim a mile."
